Concept Music Video

Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept and are usually obscure, even surreal for the audience.

Some examples of concept music videos are:

  • Somebody That I Used To Know - Gotye
  • Style - Taylor Swift
  • Trouble Is A Friend - Lenka

The unusual content in concept videos is an attraction to many consumers, which draws them in. A successful concept video will keep the audience entertained and constantly looking at who or what is on the screen.

Concept: Thematic
There are lots of common themes in music video. However, it all depends on the genre of music. For example:

Heavy metal bands go for performance dominated clips.

Sad But True - Metallica
Rap has lots of street images.

Lose Yourself - Eminem
Dance routines are common in pop videos.

When I Grow Up - The Pussycat Dolls

Concept: Symbolic

The use of symbol is seen in music videos to build up meaning. For example, a graveyard symbolises death. There are also lots of montage used (several images to create meaning sometimes often contradictory). Lighting is often used to suggest mood.

Fast paced music videos means there are only a few seconds per shot to build up meaning.
